How Kerala Families Observe the Festivals of January
Ekadashi Vratham
January has Saphala Ekadashi on 3 January and Pausha Putrada Ekadashi on 19 January. Both days are associated with Lord Vishnu, though the name used for an Ekadashi may differ between regional calendars.
Many devotees avoid rice, grains, onion, garlic, meat and alcohol. Those unable to fast fully may take fruit, milk or a simple meal. Health should always take priority over strict fasting.
- Bathe early and clean the pooja muri.
- Light a nilavilakku before Lord Vishnu or Krishna.
- Offer tulasi, flowers, fruit and clean water.
- Recite Vishnu Sahasranamam or chant “Om Namo Narayanaya.”
- Complete the worship with deeparadhana and distribute prasadam.
Puja items: Nilavilakku, oil or ghee, tulasi, flowers, fruit, incense and water.
Some households visit a Krishna or Vishnu temple in the morning or evening. The vratam is traditionally completed during the suitable Dwadashi parana period shown in the local Panchangam.
Pradosham and Masa Shivaratri
Pradosham and Masa Shivaratri both fall on 5 January, while a second Pradosham is observed on 20 January. These dates are important for families devoted to Lord Shiva.
A simple vegetarian diet is commonly followed. Some devotees fast until the evening worship, while others take fruit or one light meal. Meat and alcohol are traditionally avoided.
- Clean the prayer area and light a nilavilakku.
- Offer water to a Shiva lingam when household practice permits.
- Place bilva leaves and flowers before Lord Shiva.
- Chant “Om Namah Shivaya” or recite a familiar Shiva prayer.
- Offer fruit or payasam as nivedyam and perform deeparadhana.
Puja items: Lamp, water, bilva leaves, flowers, sandal paste, fruit, incense and camphor.
At Kerala Shiva temples, devotees may attend the evening abhishekam or Pradosha pooja. At home, a short prayer and peaceful lamp worship are sufficient.
Makaravilakku and Makaram 1
Makaravilakku (മകരവിളക്ക്) on 14 January is connected with the final stage of the Sabarimala pilgrimage season. Makaram 1 on 15 January marks the beginning of the Malayalam month of Makaram.
Ayyappa devotees undertaking formal vratham follow the discipline taught by their guru swami. Other families may observe the period with a vegetarian meal, lamp worship and Ayyappa nama japa.
- Bathe and prepare a clean household altar.
- Light a nilavilakku before an image of Lord Ayyappa.
- Offer coconut, banana, flowers and simple nivedyam.
- Chant “Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa” with family members.
- Perform deeparadhana and share prasadam respectfully.
Puja items: Nilavilakku, flowers, coconut, banana, incense, camphor and vegetarian nivedyam.
Families who cannot visit Sabarimala may attend a nearby Ayyappa temple. Household worship should remain simple rather than attempting to copy temple-only rituals.
Thaipuyam
Thaipuyam (തൈപ്പൂയം) on 23 January is dedicated to Lord Subrahmanya. Kerala Subrahmanya temples may hold special abhishekam, archana and processions according to local custom.
Devotees may keep a partial fast or eat one vegetarian meal. Onion, garlic, meat and alcohol are commonly avoided by those following a stricter vratam.
- Clean the pooja room and light a nilavilakku.
- Place flowers before Lord Subrahmanya.
- Offer coconut, banana and sandal paste.
- Chant “Om Saravanabhava” or a familiar Subrahmanya prayer.
- Perform deeparadhana and distribute the nivedyam.
Puja items: Lamp, oil, flowers, sandal paste, coconut, banana, incense and camphor.
Formal vows such as kavadi should be undertaken with temple guidance. At home, fruit or a small serving of payasam may be offered as prasadam.
