The civil date of a vratam may be decided by the tithi prevailing at sunrise, sunset or moonrise. Confirm the exact parana, moonrise and evening worship periods in the Kerala Panchangam followed by your family or district.

How Kerala Families Observe the Festivals of June

Apara, Nirjala and Yogini Ekadashi

June contains three Ekadashi observances: Apara on 1 June, Nirjala on 14 June and Yogini on 30 June. Each is connected with Lord Vishnu, though the traditional accounts and degree of fasting differ.

A moderate household observance may include fruit, milk, banana or coconut water. A waterless Nirjala fast is not suitable for everyone, particularly during illness or when regular medicine is required.

  1. Bathe and tidy the pooja muri (പൂജാമുറി) before morning prayer.
  2. Light the Nilavilakku (നിലവിളക്ക്) before Mahavishnu or Krishna.
  3. Offer tulasi leaves, flowers and a small vessel of water.
  4. Recite Vishnu Sahasranamam or repeat a familiar Vishnu nama.
  5. Place banana, coconut or fruit as nivedyam (നിവേദ്യം).
  6. Complete parana on Dwadashi at the time given in the local Panchangam.

Puja items: Nilavilakku, Vishnu or Krishna image, tulasi, flowers, water, coconut and banana.

During the rainy season, many families perform this worship at home and arrange temple archana (അർച്ചന) only when travel conditions are comfortable.

Pradosham and Masa Shivaratri

Pradosham falls on 2 June and 16 June, while Masa Shivaratri is observed on 3 June. Pradosham worship belongs to the Trayodashi evening period, not simply the entire civil day.

Some devotees take fruit or milk until the evening puja. After worship, a light vegetarian meal may be eaten; meat, alcohol and heavy food are traditionally avoided.

  1. Clean the prayer space and prepare the lamp before sunset.
  2. Light the Nilavilakku and offer a short prayer to Shiva and Parvati.
  3. Pour clean water over a household Shiva lingam if this is already the family practice.
  4. Offer flowers and bilva leaves where available.
  5. Chant “Om Namah Shivaya” without rushing.
  6. Offer banana or coconut and distribute it as prasadam (പ്രസാദം).

Puja items: Nilavilakku, Shiva image or lingam, clean water, flowers, bilva leaves, banana and coconut.

Temple abhishekam should be booked or performed according to the temple’s own rules. Carry an umbrella and use footwear areas carefully during the monsoon.

Amavasya and Pournami

Amavasya on 4 June provides a quiet occasion for remembrance, while Pournami Vratham on 18 June is associated with full-moon prayer. Household traditions for these dates can vary considerably.

Families may prepare a plain vegetarian meal and avoid meat or alcohol. Ancestral rites should be performed only according to established family practice and, where necessary, priestly guidance.

  1. Bathe and clean the household prayer area.
  2. Light the Nilavilakku in a safe, dry place.
  3. Offer water and flowers while remembering the family deities.
  4. Spend a few minutes in prayer for ancestors on Amavasya.
  5. Recite a familiar Devi or Vishnu prayer on Pournami.
  6. Offer payasam, fruit or banana as a simple nivedyam.

Puja items: Nilavilakku, water, flowers, incense, banana and a simple vegetarian nivedyam.

Kerala families generally keep an ordinary monthly Amavasya observance restrained. Elaborate Karkidaka Vavu practices should not be transferred to this June date.

Sankashti Chaturthi

Sankashti Chaturthi on 22 June is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. The fast is traditionally completed after the prescribed moonrise and prayer.

Devotees may take fruit, milk or light vratam food during the day. Appam, unniyappam, coconut or banana can be offered when consistent with household custom.

  1. Place a clean Ganesha image in the pooja muri.
  2. Light the Nilavilakku and offer flowers.
  3. Present coconut, banana and durva grass where available.
  4. Chant a simple Ganesha mantra or recite Ganesha names.
  5. Observe the moonrise requirement using the local Panchangam.
  6. Offer appam or fruit and then complete the fast.

Puja items: Nilavilakku, Ganesha image, flowers, durva grass, coconut, banana and appam.

Cloudy monsoon weather may hide the Moon, but the calculated local moonrise remains the relevant reference. Families should follow their customary procedure in such conditions.
