How Kerala Families Observe the Festivals of February
Shattila and Jaya Ekadashi
Shattila Ekadashi falls on 2 February, while Jaya Ekadashi is observed on 17 February. Both are Vishnu vrathams, though their names and traditional significance differ.
Devotees may avoid rice, grains, onion, garlic, meat and alcohol. Fruit, milk or a light vratam meal is suitable for anyone unable to keep a complete fast. Children, elderly people and those with medical conditions should follow a safe routine.
- Bathe early and clean the pooja muri.
- Light a nilavilakku before Lord Vishnu or Krishna.
- Offer tulasi, flowers, fruit and clean water.
- Recite Vishnu Sahasranamam or chant “Om Namo Narayanaya.”
- Perform deeparadhana and distribute prasadam.
Puja items: Nilavilakku, oil or ghee, tulasi, flowers, fruit, incense and water.
Some families visit a Krishna or Vishnu temple during the day. The fast is completed during the appropriate Dwadashi parana period given in the local Panchangam.
Pradosham and Masa Shivaratri
Pradosham is observed on 3 and 18 February, while Masa Shivaratri falls on 4 February. These observances are connected with Lord Shiva but follow different tithi rules.
Some devotees fast until the evening; others take fruit or one simple vegetarian meal. Meat and alcohol are avoided, and a quiet atmosphere is maintained around the household prayer.
- Clean the altar and light a nilavilakku.
- Offer water to a Shiva lingam if this is part of the family’s practice.
- Place bilva leaves, flowers and sandal paste before Lord Shiva.
- Chant “Om Namah Shivaya” or recite a familiar Shiva prayer.
- Offer fruit or payasam as nivedyam and perform deeparadhana.
Puja items: Lamp, water, bilva leaves, flowers, sandal paste, fruit, incense and camphor.
Kerala Shiva temples may conduct abhishekam and special evening pooja. At home, a short nama japa and lamp offering are sufficient for families who cannot visit a temple.
Attukal Pongala
Attukal Pongala (ആറ്റുകാൽ പൊങ്കാല) is the month’s most distinctive Kerala festival. In 2027, the programme begins on 14 February, the main Pongala nivedyam is held on 22 February, and the festival concludes on 23 February.
The central offering is traditionally prepared by women devotees using rice, jaggery, coconut and banana. Anyone attending the public gathering should follow the temple’s official instructions, permitted hearth locations and safety arrangements.
- Bathe and wear clean, comfortable clothing.
- Arrange the cooking pot and ingredients in the approved place.
- Begin preparation only according to the temple’s ceremonial signal.
- Cook the Pongala offering with prayerful attention.
- Wait for the formal nivedyam before treating the preparation as prasadam.
- Allow the hearth and vessel to cool safely before leaving.
Puja items: Clean pot, rice, jaggery, coconut, banana, water and the materials permitted by temple authorities.
Families unable to attend may offer a simple prayer to Bhagavathy at home. They should not claim that a private household preparation has received the temple’s formal nivedyam.
Sankashti Chaturthi
Sankashti Chaturthi on 24 February is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. The vratam is connected with Krishna Paksha Chaturthi and the applicable local moonrise.
Devotees may take fruit and milk during the day or follow a simple vegetarian fast. Heavy food, meat and alcohol are traditionally avoided until worship is completed.
- Clean the pooja room and place a Ganesha image on the altar.
- Light a nilavilakku and offer flowers.
- Chant a Ganesha mantra or recite a familiar prayer.
- Offer coconut, banana, modakam or unniyappam.
- Complete the vratam according to the local moonrise practice.
Puja items: Ganesha image, lamp, flowers, coconut, banana, incense and a suitable sweet nivedyam.
Some Kerala families attend an evening archana at a Ganapathy temple. Others complete a short household prayer and share the prasadam after the vratam.
