An observance can depend on the tithi prevailing at sunrise, sunset or moonrise, while a temple festival may depend on the relevant nakshatram. Please confirm exact timings in the Kerala Panchangam followed by your family, temple or district.

How Kerala Families Observe the Festivals of March

Maha Shivaratri

Maha Shivaratri is a night of Shiva worship, prayer and self-discipline. Kerala devotees commonly visit a nearby Mahadeva temple, with the Aluva Shivaratri observance being particularly well known.

Those keeping vratam may take fruit, milk, tender coconut water or a light vegetarian meal, depending on their health and family practice. Meat, alcohol and heavy food are traditionally avoided.

  1. Clean the pooja muri (പൂജാമുറി) and light the Nilavilakku (നിലവിളക്ക്).
  2. Place a Shiva image or cleaned Shiva lingam in the worship area.
  3. Offer water, flowers and bilva leaves where available.
  4. Chant “Om Namah Shivaya” and spend a few minutes in silent prayer.
  5. Offer banana, coconut or simple payasam as nivedyam (നിവേദ്യം).
  6. Receive the offering as prasadam (പ്രസാദം) after prayer.

Families who remain awake may divide the evening into periods of prayer, but elderly people, children and anyone with a medical condition need not attempt a strict fast.

Vijaya and Amalaki Ekadashi

The two Ekadashi vratams in March are Vijaya Ekadashi on 4 March and Amalaki Ekadashi on 18 March. Both are devoted to Lord Vishnu, though the associated traditional accounts differ.

A strict observer may avoid rice, wheat, pulses and regular meals. Others take fruit, milk, aval without grain additions, banana or a simple preparation permitted by their family tradition.

  1. Bathe and clean the household prayer space in the morning.
  2. Light the Nilavilakku before an image of Mahavishnu or Krishna.
  3. Offer tulasi leaves, flowers and clean water.
  4. Recite Vishnu Sahasranamam or a familiar Vishnu nama.
  5. Offer banana, aval or fruit as nivedyam.
  6. Complete parana on Dwadashi according to the local Panchangam.

At Guruvayur and other Vishnu temples, crowds can be heavier on Ekadashi. Families planning archana (അർച്ചന) should check temple arrangements in advance.

Pradosham

Pradosham is connected with Trayodashi at sunset. 5 March and 20 March are the two relevant dates, and evening worship is more important than simply using the civil date.

Many devotees eat lightly or fast until the evening puja. A simple vegetarian meal may be taken afterward, while non-vegetarian food and intoxicants are traditionally avoided.

  1. Clean the entrance and pooja muri before sunset.
  2. Light the Nilavilakku and remember Shiva and Parvati.
  3. Offer water, bilva leaves, flowers and a small piece of coconut.
  4. Chant “Om Namah Shivaya” 108 times if convenient.
  5. Visit a Shiva temple for deeparadhana or perform quiet prayer at home.
  6. Share the nivedyam as prasadam after the worship.

Kerala Shiva temples may conduct special abhishekam, archana and evening procession arrangements. Temple procedure should be followed instead of carrying out elaborate rituals without guidance.

Kumbha Bharani

Kumbha Bharani is a Bhagavathy observance linked to Bharani nakshatram in Kumbham. The best-known celebrations include temple-specific offerings and community traditions that should not be reproduced casually at home.

A household may keep a simple Devi prayer and prepare a vegetarian nivedyam such as payasam, appam, banana or coconut. Families normally avoid meat and alcohol when keeping a Devi vratam.

  1. Clean the pooja muri and light the Nilavilakku.
  2. Place flowers before the family’s Bhagavathy image.
  3. Offer turmeric, kumkum, coconut and banana respectfully.
  4. Recite a familiar Devi stotram or Lalitha Sahasranamam.
  5. Offer payasam or appam as nivedyam.
  6. Visit the local Bhagavathy temple if the family custom permits.

Large Kettukazhcha and Kuthiyottam programmes belong to particular temples and communities. Follow official temple instructions, especially for offerings, access and procession timings.
