How Kerala Families Observe the Festivals of April
Vishu and Vishukkani
Vishu is the most important Kerala household celebration in April. The first sight of Vishukkani at dawn is traditionally arranged to represent light, food, prosperity and a balanced year ahead.
Preparations are usually completed the previous night. Families make a vegetarian Vishu sadya, often including seasonal mango dishes, vegetables, rice and payasam.
- Clean the pooja muri (പൂജാമുറി) and place a clean uruli before the deity.
- Arrange rice, cucumber, mango, jackfruit, coconut, betel leaves, coins and a mirror.
- Add Kanikonna flowers and place a Krishna image near the arrangement.
- Light the Nilavilakku (നിലവിളക്ക്) safely before waking the family.
- Guide family members to view the Vishukkani at dawn.
- Offer the prepared food as nivedyam (നിവേദ്യം) before serving the sadya.
Puja items: Nilavilakku, uruli, rice, seasonal produce, coconut, mirror, coins, Kanikonna flowers and a Krishna image.
After the kani, elders commonly give Vishukkaineettam. Children should handle lamps and fireworks only under responsible adult supervision.
Sri Rama Navami
Sri Rama Navami commemorates the birth of Lord Rama and falls on the same day as Vishu in 2027. Kerala families who observe it may read a portion of the Ramayana or chant Rama nama.
Some devotees fast until the puja, while others take fruit, milk or a light vegetarian meal. Heavy food, meat and alcohol are traditionally avoided during the observance.
- Clean the prayer space and light the Nilavilakku.
- Place an image of Sri Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman in the pooja muri.
- Offer flowers, tulasi where available, banana and clean water.
- Recite Rama nama or read a short passage from the Ramayana.
- Perform a simple deeparadhana and prayer.
- Offer payasam, aval or fruit as nivedyam and share it as prasadam (പ്രസാദം).
Puja items: Nilavilakku, flowers, fruit, tulasi leaves, incense, water and a simple nivedyam.
If the household already has extensive Vishu preparations, Rama Navami worship may remain brief and peaceful rather than becoming another elaborate ceremony.
Papamochani and Kamada Ekadashi
The month contains Papamochani Ekadashi on 2 April and Kamada Ekadashi on 17 April. Both vratams centre on Vishnu worship, prayer and moderation in food.
A strict observer may avoid rice, wheat and pulses. Fruit, milk, banana or a simple vratam meal may be taken when required by age, health or medication.
- Bathe and clean the pooja muri in the morning.
- Light the Nilavilakku before Mahavishnu or Krishna.
- Offer tulasi leaves, flowers and water.
- Recite Vishnu Sahasranamam or a familiar Vishnu prayer.
- Offer banana, coconut or aval as nivedyam.
- Complete parana on Dwadashi according to the local Panchangam.
Puja items: Nilavilakku, tulasi, flowers, water, banana, coconut and Vishnu or Krishna image.
Devotees visiting Guruvayur or another Vishnu temple should check darshan and archana (അർച്ചന) arrangements, especially when Ekadashi coincides with a large regional event.
Pradosham
April has Ravi Pradosham on 4 April and again on 18 April. Shiva worship is performed during the evening period when Trayodashi is present around sunset.
Some devotees fast until deeparadhana, while others take fruit or a light meal. A simple vegetarian supper may be eaten after completing the prayer.
- Clean the worship area before sunset.
- Light the Nilavilakku and remember Shiva and Parvati.
- Offer water, flowers and bilva leaves where available.
- Chant “Om Namah Shivaya” calmly.
- Perform deeparadhana or visit a nearby Shiva temple.
- Share banana or another simple offering as prasadam.
Puja items: Nilavilakku, water, flowers, bilva leaves, incense, coconut and banana.
Kerala Shiva temples may have their own abhishekam and pradakshinam procedures. Follow the temple’s instructions rather than carrying out unfamiliar rituals independently.
