An observance may be selected according to the tithi or nakshatram prevailing at sunrise, sunset or moonrise. Confirm the exact fasting, parana, moonrise and temple timings in the Kerala Panchangam followed by your family or district.

How Kerala Families Observe the Festivals of February

Attukal Pongala

Attukal Pongala is a major Bhagavathy offering associated with the Attukal temple in Thiruvananthapuram. Women prepare a sweet rice offering in designated areas, following the signal and directions issued by the temple authorities.

The usual preparation contains rice, jaggery and coconut. Participants should follow current fire-safety, transport and crowd-control instructions rather than choosing an unauthorised roadside location.

  1. Bathe, wear clean clothes and prepare the offering materials in advance.
  2. Set up the hearth only in an area permitted by the authorities or property owner.
  3. Place washed rice and water in a clean Pongala pot.
  4. Begin cooking only after the authorised temple signal.
  5. Add jaggery and coconut according to family practice.
  6. Wait for the prescribed blessing before treating the offering as prasadam (പ്രസാദം).

Puja items: Pongala pot, rice, jaggery, grated coconut, water, firewood and a safe hearth.

Many families travel together and carry drinking water, necessary medicines and simple food. Children and elderly participants should remain with responsible family members throughout the crowded programme.

Shattila and Jaya Ekadashi

The two Ekadashi dates are 2 February and 17 February. Both are devoted to Lord Vishnu and encourage prayer, restraint and a simple daily routine.

Strict observers avoid rice, wheat, pulses and regular meals. Others may take fruit, milk, banana, coconut water or food allowed by their household tradition.

  1. Clean the pooja muri (പൂജാമുറി) and bathe in the morning.
  2. Light the Nilavilakku (നിലവിളക്ക്) before Mahavishnu or Krishna.
  3. Offer tulasi leaves, flowers and clean water.
  4. Recite Vishnu Sahasranamam or a familiar Vishnu nama.
  5. Offer banana, coconut or fruit as nivedyam (നിവേദ്യം).
  6. Complete parana on Dwadashi according to the local Panchangam.

Puja items: Nilavilakku, Vishnu or Krishna image, tulasi, flowers, water, banana and coconut.

Devotees visiting a Vishnu temple for archana (അർച്ചന) should check the temple’s Ekadashi darshan and parana arrangements separately.

Pradosham and Masa Shivaratri

Pradosham falls on 3 February and 18 February, while Masa Shivaratri is observed on 4 February. Pradosham worship is performed around sunset, whereas Shivaratri prayer may continue later into the evening.

Some devotees fast until deeparadhana or take fruit and milk. A simple vegetarian meal may be eaten afterward, while meat, alcohol and heavy food are traditionally avoided.

  1. Clean the household worship area before sunset.
  2. Light the Nilavilakku and remember Shiva and Parvati.
  3. Offer water, flowers and bilva leaves where available.
  4. Chant “Om Namah Shivaya” calmly.
  5. Perform deeparadhana or visit a nearby Shiva temple.
  6. Share banana or coconut offered during prayer as prasadam.

Puja items: Nilavilakku, Shiva image or lingam, water, flowers, bilva leaves, banana and coconut.

Kerala Shiva temples may have special abhishekam and pradakshinam procedures. Follow temple instructions instead of attempting unfamiliar rituals without guidance.

Sankashti Chaturthi

Sankashti Chaturthi on 24 February is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. The observance is connected with Krishna Paksha Chaturthi and the local moonrise, so the fast is not completed merely at sunset.

Observers may take fruit, milk or a light vratam preparation during the day. A simple vegetarian meal is eaten after moonrise worship, depending on family custom and health.

  1. Clean the pooja muri and place a Ganesha image in the prayer space.
  2. Light the Nilavilakku and offer flowers.
  3. Offer coconut, banana and durva grass where available.
  4. Chant a familiar Ganesha mantra or prayer.
  5. View or remember the Moon after the locally prescribed moonrise.
  6. Offer appam or unniyappam and then complete the vratam.

Puja items: Nilavilakku, Ganesha image, flowers, coconut, banana, durva grass and appam.

Some Kerala Ganesha temples conduct special evening puja and archana. Moonrise varies by location, so Thiruvananthapuram timings should not be applied automatically to every district.
